Hello and Howdy from the Pacific Northwest
I wanted to stop in and introduce myself. My name is Matt and I live in Washington state. I am a fairly recent wetshaving convert who has been lurking on the forums for quite some time. My wife has been fairly amused at how excited I become looking for old shaving/barber items at garage sales and such. I am currently using a Dovo Shavette, but snagged an old no name razor from my local goodwill that I am going to attempt to clean up and hone. It should be a great learning experience and pretty fun to boot.
Wanted to add one thing: Thank you all for the great information on this forum, it has been a real treat and learning experience browsing all of the threads.

Welcome to SRP officially!
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Welcome to SRP, Matt!
I only have one question for you... If you've been lurking, that means you know we love pictures... WHERE ARE THE BLOODY PICTURES, MAN!?!?!
Seriously, though, anything you need help with, let us know!"Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. That one is Obsession." -Roland Deschain of Gilead

I will see what I can do about pictures on my current project, but I will promise to be more mindful for future endeavours.

Ah, I was just razzing ya... seriously, we're definitely glad to have you on board.
It's pretty awesome that you found your razor at a goodwill. None of the ones around here ever seem to have anything shave related."Willpower and Dedication are good words," Roland remarked, "There's a bad one, though, that means the same thing. That one is Obsession." -Roland Deschain of Gilead

Hmmm, now that sounds like a neat weekend. Wonder if I can convince the wife, or better yet get someone to watch the kids and drag her along. I'm sure there are a ton of antique stores out there for her to browse. I will keep track of the thread for dates. I can't promise I will show up, so I don't feel comfortable putting in my 2 cents on exactly when/where it should be.

Hey Matt, You're gonna be a happy guy. I *DO* recommend not trying to do restoration & honing if you're still learning the str8 shave. I can say w/out hypocracy 'cause I did it - and lived to tell about it, minus a pint or two and 5 strops. Have a pro do it and it'll remove any doubt you might have about the issue being the edge or the razor. Rule of thumb for new shavers: 1-$5 fleabay/antique store special + $40 in resto/honing fees = 1 shave ready razor from the classifieds. An both can cost alot more. Should you need a hand w/ edges, let me know. I'll leave the resto to others, but will touch-up/hone for just the shipping.

Thank you pinklather. I will admit I can get the bit in my teeth and end up going to far, to fast. I recently finished (mostly...) a little drywall work in the basement that ended up in a gutting of 3/4 of said basement and about 2yrs of weekends and holidays. As far as the razor goes, you do have a valid point. I think I will start looking at the SRP classified section a little more.... course that still lets me play with my current restoration attempt As far as the honing, I will make a note so I don't forget who made the offer.

Hi Matt, I remember well, my shaves w/ my own - marginal edges and then trying a blade w/ a really nice edge. My world changed. The shave wasn't a challenge, it was pleasure. I then bought a razor honed on a costly jnat and *HAD* to have a rock that imparted this magical edge. 3 yrs+ & 425 blades later, it seems very nice edges can be had from a number of rocks - synth & natural. I just had to spend gobs of time and money to learn I didn't need to. . Enjoy the adventure. Hollar if I can be of help.
