Thanked: 3Hello from CT
Hello everyone!
so, a friend of mine got me into this whole classic shaving thing, and I must say, I enjoy it very much. Currently using a safety razor, but am researching the straight razor life.
one question....is it normal to feel so completely overwhelmed and scared? I mean hell...here I was thinking the worst thing was not to cut yourself. Never did I think there was so much involved in straight razor shaving.
i NEVER thought straight razor shaving would be so, for a lack of better words, complicated.
anyway, I have a TON of reading to do on this before i decide to even attempt to try and cut myself/not screw up a blade. I just wanted to pop in and say hello.
cheers!

Thanked: 275Don't worry about screwing up a blade.
Worry about screwing up your blood supply! <g>
It's a steep learning curve. If you can get a good shave with a DE razor, you've got the essential "background skills" to handle a straight.
. Charles. . . . . Mindful shaving, for a better world.

Don't let thoughts of a blood spattered bathroom or a trip to the emergency room deter you from picking up a straight razor. First of all, your brain is not going to let your hand run amok and slice your face to ribbons. Your sense of self preservation will protect you from that. If you have a well lubricated face, a shave ready razor and a cautious approach you will be fine. Take it by small steps and as your technique improves so will your self confidence. Everybody will sustain a nick or two, but so what. It's just a part of the learning curve and won't leave you scarred for life. Besides, when your friends ask what happened it gives you a good story to impress the with. It's a leap of faith, but once you have mastered it you will happy that you did.

Welcome to the "Place"
Your trepidation may well set you up for a good start to straight shaving. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
