G'day from Central Queensland
G'day Lads & Ladets
I thought I better come into the light and introduce myself,
as I have been lurking in the shadows here for a while now sifting through the abundant wealth of information and reading through the forums etc.
and have come to the conclusion I may already have a case of RAD especially when the bride makes comments like
I quote " How many razors do you need? you only have 1 face "
when asked what I would like for Father's Day and replied with, 'well I've been looking for a 1" Wade & Butcher which would be nice' noting this would be my 6th razor acquisition since getting my first Straight about 2 months ago for my 42nd Bday which I took a month to find,
but she doesn't seem to understand my reasoning that I want or need to practice stropping, honing, cleaning, straightening scales, restoring etc on Junkers before applying the lessons learnt a to my expensive birthday razor. LOL
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone so far and in advance for their contributions to SRP as without your contributions newbies like me would still be in the dark about nearly everything to do with straights.
Current collection:
- A fully Restored 1800's 13/16" Wade & Butcher 1/4 or 1/2 hollow square point with dark translucent horn scales & lead wedge
( very nice from Stan @ Above the tie )
- A 9/16" Wade & Butcher full hollow square point with i think spotted horn scales & no wedge just stepped scales
($20 eBay due to poor photos to practice, but only had to clean, straighten scales and strop it is my 2nd favourite now)
- A 11/16" Bengal full hollow round point with black celluloid scales & white wedge
($40 local markets cleaned, light hone & stropped only) nice razor
- A 5/8" Norton round point with dark bone scales with bone or ivory wedge
( $18 eBay, had a cracked blade so have reshaped, sanded & polished the blade, straightened, sanded & rough polished the scales, now I have new pins etc and intend to fully strip & restore it after spending about 5 hours trying to hone it in my barbers hone and still not there)
-A 4/8 H.Eicker & Sohne Biedermeier 42 yellow celluloid scales
($30 eBay in the post looks good still)
- Edwin Jagger Best Black Badger Ebony Shaving Brush
- Star shaving Big Daddy Chestnut Elgish bridal strop with felt
- Old Crown barbers hone
- An 'I done it' Razor & brush with bowl stands I made from 3mm copper wire wrapped with .1mm tin wire with a $3 Stainless bowl
now the old boy after seeing my shaving gear when visiting has told me he is sure he still has his grandfathers straight & strop at home somewhere I can have, after his Ex took the other 4 straights he had collected, So I am eagerly anticipating him finding them to add some true family history to my collection.
now I am sure this may be a prerequisite for RADs.
Also my search for a set of hones continues.
cheers

Welcome to the 'Place' Dion.
I'll bet the missus has more shoes than you have razors & I bet she only has 2 feet. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanks for the welcome
Unfortunately I can't use shoes as a comeback but the shiny crystals and dangly 'pretties' all through the house definitely are LOL

Thanked: 983Welcome to the forum Dion, sounds like you might be a candidate for hanging around the 'Workshop' boys. One way or the other you've made it to the right place.

Mighty good intro, Cobber! Welcome. You should be at home here

I rest my case.

Thanked: 1587Welcome to SRP!
Another member, Greg Fraser, used to be in Gladstone. Not sure if he is still there, and it is several years since I saw him post much here, but perhaps a PM to him may get a response. It's always nice to know someone local, and Greg is a great guy if you can get in touch.
