Thanked: 0Hello everyone!
I'm a 25 year old from upstate New York who completed my first straight razor shave earlier this morning.
Straight shaving has been something I've had my barber do on me a number of times over the years, but I hadn't thought to take it up as a hobby until quite recently. I always love the feeling that I have coming out of the barbershop after a straight shave, and apparently I mentioned in passing that I wanted to try it for myslef a few months ago, because I received my first razor as a gift from my lady friend out of nowhere on my birthday earlier this month. After buying all the other items necessary for a nice shave, I decided to dive right into it this morning, figuring I had enough knowledge from having my barber do to my own face quite a few times before. The results were actually not all that bad considering I realized almost immediately that I have no idea what I was doing, but I knew I needed guidance if I'm going to get really good at this.
The many questions I had after my experience this morning led me to the internet in search of wisdom from those who have travelled this road before me, which eventually got me the this forum. I read through Lynn's guide to shaving for the first time and had to smile at how I pretty much did NONE of the things he suggests. I already feel much more enlightened having read only that single post, and I am very thankful there is a forum with such a wealth of information to learn from, with members who seem genuinely helpful and supportive of each other.
Happy shaving,
Phil

Hi Phil,
Welcome to SRP, glad you signed on!
You read an excellent article by Lynn, and there are a couple of links below that have good info also.
I'll link this video by Glen, gssixgun on the what the shave test is. It sounds off topic, but he covers good prep, blade angle, what to expect from a properly honed razor, etc. etc..
Enjoy the forum and when you have questions, ask away. Lots of fine fellows here to help. And again......Welcome!!
Best Regards,
Howard

The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.
