Default Hello from New Mexico :)

Hi all. Just purchased my first Vintage straight the Geneva Cutlery "Ontario" 6/8" Round Point from member Prahston off the bay. I am an avid wet shaver that has decided to start shaving again with a straight (used to own a Rop Razor which I sold in 2011 when my son started walking). I recently inherited my Great Grandpa's Wiss Model #365 with Barber Notch from my Grandfather. While I could probably shave with this razor I have decided not to touch it till I know how to hone my own blade, that and it's in a nice frame!

Anyways just wanted to say hi and say thanks in advance since I am sure I will posting tons of questions since I was still learning to shave with the straight back in 2011.

    Cheers,

    Joey

Sweet display of your Grandfather's blades and case! What a cool idea! For whatever reason, in my family, when someone passed they would pass on the gentleman's wallet and all its' contents... Framing the wallet with all the stuff spread out might give it a really cool look. I hadn't thought of that before.

I hope you enjoy that Ontario razor Joey! If you have any trouble with it just let me know and I'll help however I can. 6/8's is a bit bigger than the 5/8's most people recommend for beginning but that razor has good balance so I think you'll like it... That thing is totally shave ready so go easy... Sometimes they bite!

I had no idea that purchase was from a Member here... I sell here and eBay both... Gotta figure a better way when on eBay to know who is who and all that!

Welcome and enjoy the razor and your shaving journey! It will be interesting to compare your experience now with your previous experience.

As an aside... My Grandparents lived in Santa Fe for quite a few years so we spent quite a bit of time down there visiting/doing all the Touristy Stuff... New Mexico is beautiful! I hope you get lucky someday and stumble on someone selling a whole bunch of razors for a decent price!

    Shawn,

Yeah thanks a bunch for the blade! I'm excited about it. I am no wiz with the str8 but in the 20 some shaves I did I was able to not cut or nic myself but never had a DFS either as I was still learning this lost art. Very rarely do I ever nic my self with my #15 Aristocrat only when I push my luck trying to get the blasted neck hairs that grow in circles. The Rop razor I used to have was a 6/8 so shouldn't be to bad, just the getting back on the horse routine I hope . Anyways thanks again for the wonderful razor! I will leave you positive feedback once it arrives which I'm now counting down the days impatiently LOL.

Also thanks for the compliment on Great Gramps Razor. I hope to take it out and shave with it some day even if only once. Once I get str8 shaving down I hope to pick up some stones and a decent old non-shave ready razor to learn on. Sure would like to shave proper like Great Grandpa did! Not sure if he had stones but family rumor said he did have a strop he used to whip his kids and grandkids with on the old Farm back in Illinois LOL.If you ever come to New Mexico again let me know and I can point you to some good food, and some cool places off the Touristy track.
