Thanked: 0Just started and love it.
So I consulted a lot of the FAQs and forums here before getting invested and decided to give it a go. I started out cheap, just in case I didn't like it, and picked up a $20 razor (takes disposable blades) and a $20 kit (badger brush, stand, mug and soap). My first experience was, well, rough. Lots of burn, and more than a couple of nicks. I did enjoy the process though, hot towel, lather, etc. Also, my shave wasn't that close- but, following the FAQ on here, I only shaved with the grain, and stayed away from my neck- I have had barbers have a difficult time straight razoring my neck- been told my neck is "Fierce" as the hair grows in every direction. I have a goatee/van dyke, so I don't have to deal with my chin at all, which is nice.
The second attempt was worlds better. No nicks, and only minor burn, and I braved the neck zone. I also shaved against/across the grain, and got a VERY close shave (as close as any cartridge razor I have used, which allows me to call bull-scheisse on the multiple bladed razors). I absolutely loved it, and looked forward to my next shave. I also ordered an alum block and was excited to try it out.
Third and fourth shaves were both awesome. The alum block was a nice finish (I still moisturize after the alum wash dries) and I now look forward to shaving. My fifth shave was a little rough, so I'll be changing the blade before I continue.
I have a friend who makes soap, so I will be trying some of her next batch out when I get it. She is also going to experiment with some special shaving soap for me when she makes her next batch.
Next up will be a real razor at some point. I haven't even started research on them, and while I'm inclined to something old/vintage, I'm not against buying something brand new. I'm definitely up for suggestions in that area!

Regarding a straight, a good place to start looking for a vintage straight is here in the classifieds or for a new razor look at the vendors that advertise here at SRP.
Welcome to SRP

If vintage a good place to start is the good razor section of the wiki. Good to hear your success. Everyone has a favorite razor size grind etc but its personal preference. A 5/8 full hollow is a good place to start though. Good luck.

Sounds a lot like how I started out. Ended up using the shavette for a year (kinda snuck up on me). Recently went full SR. Its kinda nice, because my shaving technique is pretty goo. Now when I have issues with my shave I can eliminate some of the variables. Currently working on proper stropping and blade angle while shaving. Getting some new soaps/creams as well (but thats just to play with new toys )
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.
