Thanked: 4Jody - Florida - new + questions
Some years ago I bought a Krop (or Kropp), and a Zenith Razor Hone.
Only today did I get it to shave.
I gave up on the first effort.
Questions:
1. Is there anything to pick from functionally with the DE razors?
2. Is there any diferent between a DE woman's and man's razor?
3. Is there any way to get email notifications when posts to threads occur?
4. Can I subscribe to threads?
Thanks,
Jody

Welcome Jody - The tool bar just above your original post and to the right will allow you to subscribe to a thread and be notified when it is updated. Just click on the "Thread Tools" button. Sorry, but I can't give you much help with DEs since I don't use them. But, I'm sure there will be someone to come along soon and help you out.
As far as your Kropp is concerned, you may need more than a barber's hone to get it in shave-ready condition. It should be properly honed and you should have a leather strop to maintain the edge once it's honed.
Again, welcome and feel free to ask any questions.

Thanked: 4I should clarify - when I bought the razor years ago, I gave up at that time.
But today, after about a week of trying, I succeeded (another round on the hone, and a polishing compound strop, and a leather stop - and it worked). I feel that I am learning by trial and error...

Thanked: 1184Sounds like your going to get it. Have you read any of the info in the library ? Of course you can ask questions but you will get answers to questions you don't have yet by reading up and some of those topics. Plus there are how to vids in there for everything.
Welcome in and good luck with help on getting a great shave.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 4I do not know why I am so talkative today.
I was thinking of the DE razors for the others in the family.
I just bought disposable replacement heads for about 2.00 each.
That is when I gave the straight razor another go.
I see that the old style blads for DE can be a lot less than 2.00, thus I was thinking of the DE for the other people in the house here.
Cheers,
Jody

From a fellow newbie, I can suggest starting at the following links to begin with:
Straight Razor Place Wiki - Straight Razor Place Wiki
Videos
I've just recently started in on it.
Welcome!!

Hi, Jody. Welcome to SRP. Below is some info for you.
1. For the basics, the functional things to consider for a DE safety razor are whether you want a fixed of an adjustable. The fixed DE is the typical style, where the blade is secured in the DE razor head at a fixed angle. The adjustable DE razor is similar, but has a dial that allows you to adjust the blade angle.
There are other things that you can also consider, such as razor weight, slim or "fat" body, chrome or gold plating, new or old razor, etc.
2. A DE safety razor is universal, so it can be used by a man or woman.
DE safety razors do not utilize replacement heads; these razors use replacement DE blades. Cartridge razors (e.g., Gillette Mach3) utilize replacement heads.
The DE blades vary in price, depending on the brand, model, and quantity that you purchase, but you can get excellent blades for under 25 ยข each. You can take the boy out of NY, but you can't take NY out of the boy.

Thanked: 52There are many variables like your type of beard, razor, how often you shave and the blade, but I usually get 3-4-5 good shaves from my DE blades (I prefer yellow Gillette 7 O' clock ). It's been a while since I used a Mach 3 cartridge, but I recall using about one a week. YMMV. However, all of my DE shaves are of a better quality than a cartridge in terms of smoothness, closeness, skin irritation, ingrown hairs--and enjoyment.

A single DE razor will last between 3 to 7 shaves. This depends on the blade, the type of hair, and the method used. A cartridge lasts about a week for me (when I last used them). Blade for blade the DE is cheaper, but you need to factor in prep materials such as brush and soap. Still cheaper, just takes a bit longer to recoup the initial investment.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.
