Thread: Good Day from a new member

Let me start off by saying that i have lurked on this site for quite some time but never made a profile. I finally decided to create one after purchasing a straight razor and refurbishing it based on the advice and knowledge that i have garnered from this fantastic place on the interwebs.

The razor in question is an H. Boker, King Cutter. I have no idea as to its age but it was only $25 and i figured it was worth a shot to try and save. Here is a picture of the state it was in when i purchased it:

It needed quite a bit of polishing and an hour or so of honing, starting on a 1k, then 4k and finishing on an 8k Norton stone. I had never honed a razor but decided to try it out and it turned out quite well. I have had 2 successful shaves with this razor and cannot fathom the idea of going back to disposable razors. I even managed to do a full shave today going with the grain, across the grain and against the grain with no cuts or nicks and skin as smooth as a baby's butt covered in fine velvet.

I look forward to reading many posts, writing a couple and learning more from this website.

Bokers are good razors. looks like you are off to a good start as well.

Thank you for the kind words. My wife is simply happy i haven't taken my head off in fell swoop. I do have to admit that the first shave was a bit nerve wracking and it was only going with the grain. So far, so good though

Good, Dave. I feel it is best to stay with the WTG and finish up with a safer method until the WTG becomes natural and more effective. Then the ATG will be easier as the former is established. Remember that shaves are spoiled by poor prep. No money needed! Just a few hot towels over lather! Makes a great difference!

All this talk of wtg, xtg, atg. I usually just do 2 passes wtg and done!
So new guy here buys a cheap vintage, hones it and goes wtg, xtg atg? Wow, congrats. It has taken me 3 years to get where you are. You must be a natural...

I don't know if i'm a natural, i just took my time and enjoyed the process. I have always wanted a proper razor and i may have started an addiction...

I'll try the hot towels today when i shave.
