Default From the east coast of nova scotia canada

Hey everybody, been poking around this site for a few days and contrast to the fact that I never sign up for websites I broke, and thought I'd give in and represent. Im 29 years old and am a straight razor virgin. I will be starting to buy all my first gear this coming friday. Big thanks to all who maintain and supply information to this site. I haven't gone out shopping at all yet, but have 3 years or metallurgical knowledge behind me for formal training in machining. Im super stoked to try my hand/face @ this. Ive read a lot of the tips/advie on this page and intend to follow it. I was wondering if anyone on here is also from Halifax or from Nova Scotia.
I guess the only question I have is one of a sharpening stone. I have been eyeballing a x8000 grit ceramic stone from lee valley. There isn't many place to buy this type of equipment here and I don't have the means to buy online.

Welcome SublimeShave, I'm not from Halifax or Nova Scotia. I'm all the way on the West Coast. You will enjoy and learn a lot from the interesting interchanges you will have with the diverse world wide membership. Take it slow and take it carefully. I would say that even with your metallurgical background I would postpone honing your razor for some time. Razor honing is nothing like honing knives. A different mind set is needed for a successful honing. If there are members in your area one of them can hone or can put you in touch with a good honer. I would say if the 8000K is decent and flat it would be a good beginning stone for learning to refresh your razor after a number of months of use. I don't hone my razors but am learning to refresh them as they start to perform less that they should. Hopefully if therre are members in Nova Scotia one of them is, or can act as, a mentor that you can meet face to face and have one-on-one training. I live 50 minutes from my mentor and get t see him every couple of months. He is a willing fountain of information and ready to share at any time. Any good mentor will be like that. Again welcome to the wild world of straight razor shaving and all that goes with it, Ask, ask ask, the answers are many and varied.

You should change your intro square to show where you are from. That way Nova Sc0tians will see another member and start contacting you.

Hello. Welcome. I am from the other side of the country and can't help you much about Nova Scotia stuff. Lee Valley also stocks the commonly used Norton hones as well. Not close but there are several shops in Ontario that have a lot of shave gear.

Thank you razor and rez, I will get on my profile shortly in hopes that I find somebody close that would be willing to take me under their wing.
Despite my background I will definitely be looking to have my first dedicated shaving straight profesionally hone( hopefully by somebody on this site after I set up a paypal account) I am excited to see the results of a pro with a stone! And to make emulation of he result my ultimate goal when honing.
I also have an idea to find a few used razors that I can play around with using a surface grinder lol (always have to find a way to machine everything)
I will also be trying my hand on some of these old ones before ever trying to hone my actual shaving razor.

I love the fact that straight razor shaving has its own sub-culture. So rich in history, and shrouded in mystery
I will make sure to keep everyone updated on my progress and experiments as they unfold-cheers

Thanks for the thanks, and now get ready for the sillies and inanities that go along with the mystery of it all. It's an affliction that attacks us all and you never know who pops up with the weirdest set of words.

Hi and welcome. There is 1 bloke I know of in Nova Scotia named brooksie. He has a couple threads in the brush making. If you use the community link at top might help you find him. I know he hones and has used pastes etc. Might be an idea to give him a pm
