Thanked: 0Hello from Portland
I've shaved with a straight for the fist time yesterday. I've got a strop on the way and just got a newspaper to strop with in the meantime. I've been wetshaving with DEs for 8 months already and moving to, or at least trying out, straights seems to be a common progression.

Welcome aboard! Glad to see another member from the PNW. Your prior experience with a a DE will serve you well. You have come to the right place. Let us know if you have any questions.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 734Somehow I doubt that Portland is anything like this but I do love this show. "Remember when kids grew up to be artisan bakers, everyone had home made haircuts and guy's shaved with straight razors?".

Welcome athair from a SRP member in Forest Grove. There are a lot of members in this neck of the woods. I suggest that you get together with a mentor to make sure your razor is properly honed and have a one on one with him to answer many of your questions with out the delay of posting back and forth. One thing he, and I and a lot of members will say, is do not, repeat, do not try to hone your own at this time till you can manage a series of proper technique shaves. My mentor is pinklather, he lives in Scapoose, not that far. Send him a PM about getting together with him. He will, time permitting be more than happy to do a one on one. If you do arrange a meeting and transportation is a problem (don't know if you are a student or what on a limited budget) you can take Max out to Hillsboro and I'll take you the rest of the way. I always enjoy meeting with him.

Razorfeld, Wow, that's about the friendliest response I've gotten onine, thank you. I am not a student and transport wouldn't be the problem there but time would and money always is. I've got two young kids and a more than full time job. I got up yesterday at 5am just to have the uninterrupted time for my first straight shave. Insomnia sucks, but had a benefit for once. I live on the other side of Portland near 205 so that would be a long drive, but I'll keep this in mind though.

Welcome to the forum!
Lots of great people here, lots of info, pretty much can answer any question you can think of, probably even the, "meaning of life".
It's a great journey - enjoy!

Portland is awesome like that. But as a network engineer I don't aspire to be a baker, or cut my own hair.
