Thanked: 0Hello from Indiana
Hello folks, I am a first timer and I got interested in straight razors due to the fact that I'm trying to get back to the basics of life. I restore old guns, old furniture, and any old antiques in general. I have started to collect shaving memorabilia and decided it was just the next step to actually use the razors I am collecting! I haven't got to use one of them yet due to the fact that I am used to sharpening knives and I don't want to mess up the honing process since I know I simply have the muscle memory of a knife in my head and none of my other razors are shave ready at this point. I am shopping around to see what is the best starter to begin with. I actually picked up a Gillette Super Speed 1940's era Safety Razor today at a antique shop for 3$ today. I welcome the history and effectiveness of these razors and cant wait to actually jump into using them!
Thank you.

Hello Mortal. It's nice to see a new member realize that you can't start honing your own razors at the beginning. A couple of suggestions. Edit you info block on the left to show where you are and then post asking if there are any mentors in your area or near by. Their value to you, even though you can hone knives, would be to walk you through the razor honing process as well as hone a straight razor for you. Most mentors are people that are dedicated to this 'sport/hobby/way of life' of ours and are willing to give of their time gratis to encourage more people to stick with it and learn. It would also help to read all the Wiki's in the Forum you can. A lot of questions will be answered that way. Mentors are also bottomless pits on shaving techniques and the like. And last, ask, ask, ask, everybody on the forum have answers (and great, weird and strange humor that gets thrown in for good measure). Enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the most friendly, helpful and informative site on the web!!
You will find members here of all different backgrounds, ages and occupations from all corners of the world and all with a quest for more knowledge about using and maintaining a straight razor!
If you take the time to search, 99.9% of your questions can be found in the Library (WIKI) however feel free to ask us about whatever it is that you are wondering about or having a problem with. It does help if you’ve done some research before hand so it narrows the problem down a bit.
A truly Shave Ready Razor/straight razor is essential to start down the path to a wonderful older but better way of shaving!!
If you do some research you will find that FleaBay sucks when you are new and don't know the difference between s**t and apple butter!! Stay away until you have established some knowledge of the blades and the art!!
If you already have a straight razor or two that are in decent shape have them honed so you can get out of the gate on the right foot!! Check out the Classifieds here at SRP for some really good and reliable people to hone for you!
Also remember that a strop is absolutely essential!!! I prefer cloth and leather!
Again,
Welcome!!Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
