Newbie to the SRP Fourm
My name is Bob, but many know me as Gonzo. I am fairly new to the Straight razor world but have been a safety razor user for about two years, Now I am getting really attached to this new obsession and hobby. I think I have seven straights right now. I want to really learn honing next. I know to be patient, but want to touch up my own razors. I am a very tough bearded person, Any suggestions on setting an edge or type of straight that will hold edges longer?
I am from the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and am looking to find some local help in the area. I look forward to hearing from many of you. Thanks for letting me into this forum.
Please if you were on a submarine, I started a group called Submariners. I want to start sharing experiences and tales of being under the water.
Best Regards,

Thanked: 1184Welcome in Gonzo. I am waaaay out west but I am sure someone in your neck of the woods will chime in sooner or later. You can look in the members list and search locations, maybe send a pm to someone close to you. There are lots of helpers in here so you picked the right place to come to. In the library you will find all kinds of things to watch and read in the mean time.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Welcome in!
With the DE experience you have a good part of it whipped.
Many believe the Stainless hold an edge better,
from personal experience I can say many of the US steels do as well.
Poke around the forum,
we have some members from around Chi town so some hands on should be available for you.
Again welcome aboard.

As stated before, your DE experience will help with your learning curve using straights since (I assume) you have down the lather and prep aspect. A lot of people have opinions on the carbon vs stainless (and all of the variations of them). IMO there is not as much of a difference in actual steel as in the actual honing of the blade. DE/SE blades have evolved to have different coating and heat treatments. What counts is a really good honing. TBH, I have only recently been able to tell the difference between a 8K edge and a 12K edge.
Welcome aboard, it's a great hobby and this is a great group of people. The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Welcome to SRP. There is a group for Chicago area members that you might check out.
Good luck on your submarine group. There are a couple of Bubbleheads amongst the membership.
