Hello from Capso in Phoenix!
Hello all, my name is Nate, tho everyone calls me Capso. Its what I like best too. I live here in The Valley of the Sun, Phoenix Arizona.
I collected Straight Razors when i was a teen, tho I wasn't educated on them in the slightest and they were more of a decoration collection than anything. I had a few broken, chipped and desperately out of shape blades and scales, as well as the odd couple of complete straights that needed a good restore. The collection was stolen and years have past...
Now 33, Ive recently decided to make a go at collecting again, but feel drawn to shaving with Straight Razors. I know its a learned process that isn't easily undertaken...but I know Ill love it, here are a few reasons why:
*Almost all aspects of my life Ive found satisfaction with...have a ritual or detailed care is needed.
*I love true craftsmanship, and the meticulous maintenance of it. Its therapeutic, and lends pride through the luster of finish.
*Im forever stung by this reality: The value of "built to last" artisan craftsmanship and maintinence is too easily overlooked by my peers. To the point that everything is disconnected from personal feel and disposable.
*Im an artist, and find beauty and inspiration in the shape, feel, and age of these pieces of steel. I find the uniqueness and wide variety of mugs, brushes, hones, and strops gravitational in their pull to me.
*I find romance in watching the soulful process of shaving with straights. The idea that the razor being used, was used by others in the past and in my case, will be passed to my own boys in the future...The overall history and future that is inherently attached to each piece is nourishing.
I wont be taking on shaving until I get a full set and a shave ready blade, but here is my first "score" for the collection. A "Medium Size Hollow Ground" Wade & Butcher I recently picked up for $10. You can faintly read "Pious Hands" handwritten on the handle. It looks to be a handmade single piece handle/scales not original to the blade. I honestly think with a good hone, and strop, this would be shave ready...I just dont have to tools or experience. In time I suppose.
Here is a DePews inspired painting I recently finished.
Looking forward to chatting with many of you, and benefiting from the vast experience and knowledge pool available here.
Cheers,
