Thanked: 0Greetings from a college student
I have not actually purchased a razor yet, but I have done quite a bit of research on straight razor shaving. I'm glad I discovered this forum because it is really packed with useful information! My interest in this art form stems from a desire to save money along with avid environmentalism. I avoid disposable products and minimize unnecessary use of electricity and fossil fuels, so I am finally applying that obsession to my facial care routine. The classifieds on this site seem very reliable, but I would like to know: Is haggling generally utilized or frowned upon here?
Best wishes!

Saving money is a lofty goal, and very reasonable if you can hold yourself to 1-3 razors ... Personally I started in September and have about 15-17 razors right now .... the "collection" aspect can become pretty addictive

Thanked: 60Welcome to SRP! There are a lot of good reasons to pick up straight shaving. The classifieds here should be full of quality items from quality folks. I've only purchased one item on here and I paid the asking price, which was quite reasonable. If you're looking for something fairly basic to get started, I'm sure you can find a quality shave ready razor in the $40-60 dollar range.

Also check the Whipped Dog site. My understanding is that he has a number of razors that don't look good but are good shavers and come to you honed and ready to use. It's a sight unseen kind of purchase but I've seen quite a number of very good responses to his offerings. And excellent prices for the budget restrained of us.
Also, if you list where you are from in your ID on the left of the page there should be a number of SRP members in your area you can get with for a one on one session or two for hands on experience. There are mentors all over the place that often will hone a razor for you to get you started.Last edited by Razorfeld; 12-27-2013 at 04:02 AM. Reason: additional thought

Thanked: 60I've gotten the sight unseen deal from whippeddog a few times and gotten some nice shavers out of the deal. Larry is also great to do business with.

Thanked: 4827they are very minimalist razors with a nice edge. If you decide that you want to clean it up a little be aware that you can kill the edge super fast with polish. Welcome to the site.

Hi and welcome. Try to avoid the various addictions and you can shave quite cheaply with a straight. A straight will last a lifetime or two so a nice blade is an investment as it is something you will always have. Where ever you start with a razor just make sure it is shave ready and you will be right. As said read the starter info in the library as you will need a strop etc to start with as well. Good luck and enjoy the journey. Ed
