Default new memeber and straight razor user from jacksonville NC

Hello everyone. Some time ago a friend of mine talked me into getting a cheap shave brush and cake of soap to use with my Gillette . Little did i know this would spark a whole new interest. I have been digging and reading through these forms looking for information on what i needed to get started on a real shave. I am proud to say i just purchased a wester bros as my first razor. I do hope i made a good buy. I am going to post it up and get some opinions.

Welcome! That looks like a nice razor, should do just fine! It looks like you've got a matching box in wonderful condition also! Not that it will improve the shave, but it's sure nice! Make sure it's in shave ready condition, otherwise there are several experienced members here to whom you could send it out and have it professional honed. Check the members services section of the classifieds.

Welcome and congratulations. One of my two razors is a Wester Bros Fraternity, purchased used from eBay. I prefer it to my purchased-new Dovo "Best Quality." My Wester Bros holds an edge wonderfully and shaves smooth. I like that the squarish toe is more precise than a rounder toe, but not so sharp as to require a lot of caution. And, yours is _much_ prettier than mine.

    Welcome!
    I'm a newb too.
    That's a beautiful Wester!
I have a Wester Tornado. It honed up sooo easy and is very sharp. The only issue is my skills using it. But practice makes perfect.
Only advice I have is beware of RAD and HAD, they are most definitely real.
As far as shaving.... Taaaake yoooooouuuuurrrr time.

Hi and welcome. That razor looks in nice condition with slight toe wear but since that dulls the square point it is probably a good thing for a beginner and if honed correctly will square out again in time. As said make sure it is shave ready before starting and if you haven't yet check out the first shave advice in the library. Happy shaving and happy new year. Ed

thanks for all the replies and advise. I am chomping at the bit for this thing to arrive. I do not own a good stone to get it sharpened up. My neighbor has a norton 4k/8k i am going to use. unfortunately he moves soon I do have two swattys inbound as well so i hope to get to use his nortons forfore he goes. The swattys should keep me going to find time to get my own nortons.
