Thanked: 0Hello from Ohio
My name is Devin Presley, I joined the forum around a week ago. I have gotten really interested in shaving with a straight razor so I can get a really good shave. Im in search of the right one for the right price still. My grandpa, who was a barber, gave me one of his stropes to use when I get my self a razor. Right now I am using a DE safety razor and love it. My grandpa told me a straight razor will get the job done better. So that got me really interested in them also. I have been watching up on some videos, and reading lots of posts on here. I am ready to learn how to shave with a straight razor and get the best shave, and shave like a real man.
If anyone knows where I can get a a shave ready razor for a decent price, Im in college so I dont have a big budget right now, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I would also like to get a set of honing stones at a reasonable price.Last edited by razorPresley; 01-15-2014 at 08:03 PM.

Welcome to SRP!
Grandpa's can be great influences. Does he still use one? I learned to use a straight from my dad and grandpa when I was just starting out they both used them until their health would not allow it (they had strokes)
As for a good, inexpensive shave ready razor, you have 3 choices, post a want to buy ad in the classifieds here, find one on the for sale pages in the SRP classifieds or check out the whipped dog . on a tight budget you may find that you will wind up with not the prettiest razor but that has nothing to do with how well it shaves.
enjoy,

Thanked: 0Thanks Jim,
But no my grandpa doesnt shave with them any more, he did say he has a couple of straight razors still. But they have some rust:/ would it be a good idea to restore the blade myself, or send it out to someone on here to restore and hone for me? Thanks for the help!

Hi and welcome. Firstly don't use your grandpas strop for the moment. Get a cheaper one and use that as you will likely nick it up a fair bit while learning. If you have some pics of the razors we could give better advice but if only minor work is needed I would send it to a pro as they will need honing anyhow and it would only add a moderate expense to have them done properly and know there will be no issues. The workshop section of the site deals with restoration and you may find some useful info there. Maybe get a cheaper razor to start with while you learn what you need for restoration as again it would be a shame to harm your grandpa razor from and mistakes or accidents while learning. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask. Ed
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 0Thanks Ed,
I will get one of the razors from him and post some pics when I can. I dont want to harm any of his stuff soI will have one of the frofessionals on here do it. I will follow your advice and find some cheap razors to start on learning how to restore, when I get the tools I need to do it that is.
