Thanked: 2Virginian trying a straight razor
Good morning
The notion of using a straight razor has always interested me. I learned on a Gillette double edge and just recently went back to the comfort and closeness available to those using a DE. Now I'm ready to expand my skills a bit and have purchased a SR and strop. Wish me luck!

Welcome vaplanman! I'm also in Virginia, VA beach. This site has a ton of great information. What straight did you get? Did you get it from someone who will make it truly shave ready? Happy to be of any help!
State v. Durham, 323 N.W. 2d 243, 245 (Iowa 1982) (holding that a straight razor is per se a "dangerous weapon").

Thanked: 2It's an inexpensive Shumate Cutlery straight. The gentleman I bought it from honed and stropped it before sending it out. I'm not going to touch it before the first shave tomorrow morning but I will strop it afterwards.
Thanks for the offer of help! I may take you up on that depending how tomorrow goes!

Just remember to go slowly. Whatever you miss you can touch up with your DE. If you get stuck on areas like your chin, your neck then leave them for now while you get used to the angle and the feel of the blade while shaving your cheeks. Light, light pressure!
Good luck for your first shave, let us know how you go!- Chris -
