    Default Greetings from San Diego

I'm new to SRP, tomorrow morning is my 1st official straight razor shave. I've been in the USN for 16 years and grown tired of all the money spent on electric and commercial razors.

I look forward to delving into a once proud naval tradition that was prevalent in the wardroom when our ships had wooden hulls. I desire to eliminate this humdrum grooming process mandated in the military, and create a pseudo traditional daily morning battle rhythm that is both nostalgic and therapeutic.

I attached my beginners kit, before I invest. I look forward to gleaning from your expertise.

AugustChief, welcome aboard the USS SRP. And thank you for your service. Looks like you put some thought into your beginning kit. Do be aware that shaving with a shavette you need to be very conscious of blade angle and where the tip of the blade is to avoid nicks and cuts. Take your first shave carefully and maybe just shave sideburn to jaw line the first time and finish with what you've been using before to slowly acquaint yourself with how different a shavette and straight razor can be. Ask a lot of questions, all the members are more than willing to answer when they can.

Thanks Razorfield, I did some dry runs with the plastic insert only to get general feel. I will adhere to your advice.

Welcome to SRP AugustChief! There are plenty of good tips to read here and videos to watch before you get started. Razorfeld gave you some good advice - if you think things are getting a bit tough or you are starting to cut yourself up, switch to a DE or another razor to finish the shave and try again tomorrow. There's plenty of time to learn, so just take it slow.

Good luck with the first shave.
