Thanked: 0Hello from London, UK
Hi Guys,
The name's Ross, been shaving with DE's and singles for a while now, and want to get into using proper straights. I am currently taking time to learn about restoring and have a project on the go. A nice Kropp (made in Sheffield, ground in Hamburg). I also have found a George Butler 'Keen' with a good blade but quite a bit of wear. Any tips for restoring and making scales would be greatly appreciated as this is my first venture into real straights.
Chat soon hopefully.
Ross

Hey Ross, welcome to the forum.
I don't know anything about restoration myself, but there's a lot of info on the subject in the library.
There are some members who restore razors and I'm certain they'll help you out if you need help. You can find them under the classified section, member services.Last edited by Yves81; 01-28-2014 at 06:58 PM.
Sometimes I feel normal.
Then it's time to lay down and wait for it to pass.

G'day Ross. Welcome to the forum. I'm jealous. You'll have access to some great straight bargains from the antiques markets around London. Portabello Road had a few but the best place I found was the Bermondsey Market. I clean up blades using a bench grinder running cotton buffing wheels with different grit greasless compound. It works really well.
Cheers

Hi Ross, and welcome to SRP! As others have said, there is plenty of information about all aspects of razor repair and restoration in a number of places on the site.
First, the forum: there is an entire forum section called The Workshop where you'll find all kinds of info. Whenever you have a repair or restoration question, that's the place to start looking as well as the place to post your questions. In particular, take a look at this thread. It's a 'sticky' and so canm always be found at the top of the workshop section.
Second, the Wiki (aka the Library). There is a Repair and Restoration section there as well. In particular, check out Brad Maggard's (aka Undream and one of the owners of Maggard Razors) Straight Razor Restoration Start to Finish videos there.
And most of all - enjoy the process!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.
