Greetings from Florida!
Hello all! I have been browsing these forums for the last couple of months and finally decided to register today. I am a 25 year old male that currently lives in Orlando, FL (I guess quite a few people are in FL from here!) and had been wanting to get a straight razor for many years because the way our grandfathers and their fathers shaved always appealed to me. I always liked the idea of men back in the day going to a barber shop not only to get a shave, but to socialize with others as well. I feel that in this modern fast-paced society a lot of the little finer things got lost and replaced with a "convenience" label but with a loss of quality. People have always told me that I was born in the wrong era as from time to time I like to dress up (vest, tie, and all) and go out for a martini or something crazy like that.
I finally broke down and bought a Ralf Aust 5/8 a couple of months ago, and I love it! I do not miss my Mach 3 razor one bit, even for the convenience factor. The whole art and process of stropping your blade (still getting the hang of that btw), and then there's this ritual of prepping my face with a hot towel, pre-shave oil, and then the actual shave. It is pretty incredible. I have only shaved four times as of now, and have been getting more comfortable and a little better with every shave. It really is an art form and that's what I really enjoy about straight razor shaving; the focus and attention to detail. I also love the idea of using my current razor for years, then buying another one, and possibly handing down one of my razors some to my future kid(s).
Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and to give a big thanks to all of you for helping me to finally delve into this dying (or resurgence?) tradition. I am glad to be part of this community. See you all later, my razor is calling my name.
