Thanked: 0Hello from Surrey, UK
Hi I've recently gone back to shaving after a lengthy break due to continued razor burn from those awful multi bladed razors (5 blades!). I've taken an interest in straight razor shaving and have been shaving myself for about a month prior to joining this forum.
I primarily use my new Dovo 6/8in best quality, high carbon steel, full hollow ground razor, nothing too fancy but a nice blade all the same.
I enjoy my shaving and have success most of the time. I'm gradually progressing with my shaving and stropping with help from this forum, books and videos from other SRP members.
I enjoy trying out different methods and shaving products as I have a few different soaps & aftershaves, a couple of shavettes and a Merkur 1904 style replica Gilette DE safety razor (for quick shaves). I intend on buying more products plus I've got my eye on a couple more new straight razors (when money allows).
This site has proved very useful over the last few months and hopefully will continue to do so.
Also I would love to get hold of Lynn Abrams shaving DVD (even as a video download or something) as it's proving difficult to get over here in the UK without paying loads for shipping and waiting a month for it to arrive. Any help on getting hold of it (even as a loan) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanked: 60G'day and welcome to SRP.
Good to hear you're enjoying the forum and all the info contained within.
Don't be shy to answer or ask questions. Everyone is at a different stage and we all do things a little differently, I sure have learned a great deal here, things I would never have thought of even.
Apart from that all I can say is EnjoyIt is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness

Thanked: 0Thank you all for your warm welcomes. I do have a question that someone may be able to help me with. I know I'm probably getting ahead of myself here but I like to be prepared. I was just wondering what kind of hone I should get for my razor for touch ups in the future when I feel the blade dulling?
I got the razor brand new and started using it beginning of Jan this year, I strop before and after shaving. The blade still feels good at the moment from stropping. I do have a slate hone with slurry block from Wales (the seller reckons it's about a 12k grit).
Would my hone be any good or is it worth investing in something else?
Any suggestions would be great.

Hello from another Brit!
Those Welsh stones vary a bit from one to another and to be honest there is no way of knowing whether yours really is 12000 grit. It may well do the job just fine but I'd recommend trying a paddle pasted with something like chromium oxide when your razor starts to feel a little dull. Honing on a stone really takes time to learn whereas a paddle strop seems to come a bit more naturally and really is all you need most of the time.

Did you get the welsh hone from ebay, think the seller is AJ. If so he has had some good reviews and the hone would likely be above 10k and sufficient for touch ups. If you decide to use it watch some of Lynns and Gssixguns vids on youtube first
