Thanked: 2Nashville Newcomer
Wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. Typical run of the mill guy, over worked and underpaid 30 y/o from Tennessee. Living in Nashville these days, teaching music (high school teacher) and playing music professionally. On to shaving!
I'm very much a beard enthusiast; however I am also very appreciative of a close smooth shave. Straight razor shaving has been something that has interested me since I was in high school (shaved my head often) but never really considered looking in to actually buying one and learning to use one. Well alas here I am waiting until I get my tax return to buy what I need to get started in to the world of shaving with a straight razor. Though I wouldn't complain if I won the raffle this month and got to start a little earlier than expected. Hahaha. :P
Thanks for having me!

Ain't nothing to it. I'm 50 miles SE of you, been getting better with every shave and every hone and I'm only just begun. Holler if you need some honing or testing.
I keep the antiques shops around here in check and bought 2 at our local flea mkt last Saturday
I just can't pass up a deal when i see one i like and/or think will make a great shaver for someone else, with a little help usually.
From the flea mkt I got a near-shave-ready (to be tested--if it shaves it'll be the very first razor i've used that i didn't hone), AND the other one had a nick in it that i missed. Mostly because the blade was greased down. Anyhoo, I fixed the blade last night, due for retest since putting full finish on edge.
Only thing i hate about SR shaving is that I didn't start sooner. Maybe not at 16, but sometime before 46 would have been fine. I started with DE, then quickly made the leap (slowly).
Enjoy the trip.Last edited by WadePatton; 02-04-2014 at 12:44 AM.

Thanked: 2I've been searching for places here and there for the best deal to get started, obviously Im gonna need to get everything (strop, soap bowl/cup, razor, soap, brush, and products to maintain said items). I've been eye balling a few places online, but I am always a fan of seeing products in person. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate a shop via the internet here in Nashville that caters for straight or safety shaving. Though I hadn't considered checking antique shops for this, thanks for the idea!!!
Maybe I can open a shop here in Nashville, that place would be pretty massively popular I think...

Hi and welcome. Do a bit of reading in the library and hopefully any purchases you make can be quality equipment. There is a lot of junk out there. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask. Ed

Welcome to SRP! Seems you've found the right place to begin researching before your first straight razor shave. Go slowly and you'll be fine. Have any questions...just ask. Best of luck!

Welcome to SRP. I'm in the Nashville area as well. If you ever do open that shop, I'll be sure to send you a resume. I'm also an overworked/underpaid guy working in the music field.
This site has tons of great info and plenty of people willing to answer any questions you might have.
Let us know what you end up buying!
