Thanks for the quick responses! I have some Kiehls shaving cream was wondering if that was good to start with and any suggestions on specific shaving soaps to buy. As for a meet up would definitely be interested in something in nyc.

With eBay razors I've been trying to stick the razors to buy guide and it is definitely addicting buying them

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.
I've also been thinking about taking a shaving class. I didn't take it. IMO it was a bit expensive. For the price of the shaving class, I could buy a razor from the classifieds. (Also a very good place to look for your first razor, since all sellers are members so they have to be sure about what they're selling for what price. And you can be sure that if it says shave ready, the razor really is.)

When you take a class, you have 1 teacher who teaches his way of shaving. On this site, you have a lot of different teachers with their own expercience and way of shaving which is more valuable IMO.

The guy who teaches the class here, said the class was interesting to meet people who are also into straight shaving, but there would be no other real benefits. The hand out a bundle with technique and he said that would be enough.

In retrospect, I believe the class would be a waste of money. I started straight shaving not so long ago and still have a lot to learn. On this site you find often the words: a big learning curve or learning how to straight shave is all about the journey.
It is something that takes time and I don't think you can learn a lot by taking one lesson. It's much better to read as much as possible from the beginners section and look at some videos on Youtube.(look for Lynn's videos, Geofatboy or mantic59)

All there is left to say for me is: Have fun!
    Sometimes I feel normal.
Then it's time to lay down and wait for it to pass.

Question, is strop paste necessary and is a two sided canvas strop necessary? Thanks

Btw got my razor from eBay. Looks to be honed well and very functional with some slight pitting. It is a freije and asha not sure if anyone knows anything about them.

Thanks for all the help guys

NYCshaving, paste isn't necessary. Everyone needs an unpasted leather strop, and a majority will also say that the second, linen (or cotton) strop component is needed. Some use abrasive paste on a separate strop, from time to time, as a means of refreshing the edge between honings.
    Keep your pivot dry!
