Thanked: 0New from Miami
Hello everyone,
Greetings from Miami! I've been perusing the site since December, but finally decided to post and introduce myself. I haven't started using a straight razor yet, but that's about to change; I just won an auction for a Robeson Shuredge. Since I'm as new as it gets to using straight razors, I'm also thinking of getting a cheap Gold Dollar that's shave ready, but I've read mixed opinions on GD razors (thoughts?).

Hi and welcome. Get the razor honed and get shaving. Personally as a gold dollar is 5 dollars on ebay unless it was 30 shave ready including postage I wouldn't buy it snf I would definitely be posting here make sure that the site I brought it from was a good seller. I would buy the gd and use it for honing practice and if it turned out ok I would use it and if not I would just buy something else.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 4827Hello and welcome. There are so many top quality vintage razors that sell for very small amounts in the classifieds I can't imagine why anyone would be bothered with a Gold Dollar. Watch the classifieds for a vintage that fits your budget. I have seen nice razors with free resharpens for under $50, I don't think you should do anything else for your next razor. While you are in the classified section you can go to the member services area and find someone to hone your Suredge. There is a to to read and videos to watch here to get you going on learning. Happy shaving!
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

There are a lot of guys who feel uncomfortable cutting themselves with a razor that had previously 'bleed' 1, 2, or more other guys.
As I never cut myself I don't share those feelings.

Thanked: 39They're not bad - my personal experience would incline me to buy an untouched (and mega cheap) Gold Dollar and learn to hone as well as rescale. I bought one and honed it to a shave ready standard which then meant i could hone my nicer vintage razor when it needed retouching. Not sure I'd bother to buy one that was shave ready when Whipped Dog do a shave ready vintage deal for about the same price or less.

Welcome to SRP! I second the vote to instead check for value priced razors in the Classifieds here. A GD will only give you problems you don't need at this point in your shaving journey. Good luck!

Thanked: 634Welcome. I agree that you get that razor honed and get started. As for the gold gollar I would not waste the money. Make sure you like it after you get your razor honed and then perdue a new or restored vintage razor of good quality.
There is a store in Aventura "The Art of Shaving" where you can get a straight professional shave. They also carry razors but they are a bit expensive. Good luck and keep asking questions. We are all glad to help.

Is the razor you won at auction shave ready. if not send it to a pro don't start off handy capped. since your new to the sport of straight razor shaving please watch the videos on u tube. there are many. look up Lynn Abrams straight razor shaving and from there you can not only learn from him but also there are several linked to watch. I'm not computer savvy but when you get to the site you'll see what I mean. I think the Gold Dollar might be listed as a not recommended . At the beginning of SRP you can look up a list of recommend ed and not recommended razors. Remember start off with as much knowledge as you can at what your going to do. I hope that makes since

Thanked: 0Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I think I'll heed the general advice and not get a GD--instead I'll start off working with the Shuredge. Yes, it's supposed to be shave ready (so, hopefully, it actually is). It seems pretty decent--especially for the price I won it at. I'll also be sure to look at the videos.
