Default Hello, noobie from Denton Texas

So about this time last year I had this great idea of getting into straight razor shaving. I knew nothing of the sorts. I thought I could just go to a beauty supply shop pick up a blade and start shaving. 🙈. So surprisingly I found a ten Dollar razor at a local beauty supply store. Rushed home and tried to shave with it. 😫. Boy did that hurt. So then I started researching a little. Found out firstly that the razor was crap. But mostly I stumbled into maintenance and care for straight razors. Wow way more than I ever expected but something kept pulling me in. So I bought a $20 strop on eBay and a Arkansas stone at a local retail store. After messing around on the stone and strop for a few weeks I tried shaving again. 😩. Still no good. Then I stumbled across this forum as well as other video posts on YouTube. Found out that I needed proper honing stones and a good razor made from good steal, not cheap Chinese stainless. So I hit the local pawn shops for a vintage blade. Thought I scored one for $20. After restoring it to the best I could knocking the rust off, I tried sharpening it on 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, cause I still can afford really getting into honing, it was sharp enough to cut hair off my arm but still no good on my face. So now super frustrated and reading up on what I am doing wrong I asked my wife if and when we get some extra money can I just go ahead and get all new and top of the line stuff. She wasn't very happy. I had already put $100 or more into me messing around with dull razors. Well last night she bought me a dovo from Taos and now I'm super excited about getting into this properly. So I panned on saving up and getting some hones and good strop from srd. Thanks to all you members and your posts helping out other newbs. I feel much more knowledgable about what I'm getting into. So thank you and I look forward to being apart if the shaving community. Happy shaving.

    Sorry for the novel.

Few and far in-between. Most meets are lucky to have a high caliber guy at a meet...the mini-meet has two.

You need to learn to shave first. Then learn to touch up a razor. Then and lastly learn to hone.

By the way, welcome aboard. You made the best first step in learning to shave by joining here. There is enough info here to keep you pre-occupied for days. Then the fun part is taking that learned knowledge and applying it...

I tried to learn to hone while learning to shave…not something I would wish on anyone. If I was starting over with my first new factory-grind Dovo, I'd have one of the hot shots here hone it shave-ready for me. A lot of my early frustrations could have been avoided!
