    Default Howdy from Purdue University!

Howdy! Alamo here from the West Lafayette, Indiana area! Home town is back in Texas though, but most of my time is back at school.

Just a college student that has had a passion for guns, knives, and handmade leather, and it seems like the natural progression of things would be straight razor shaving.

I have gotten myself an Omega 49 boar brush, some Col. Conks soap, and a styptic pencil already. Been breaking in the brush and practicing my lather for the past few days. So far things are going pretty well. The brush is still a bit scratchy, but it's already gotten much softer than when it was brand new, and the wet pig smell is gone!

The straight razor I ordered is being delivered today, but I don't get home from class until about 6:30pm, so I'm still hours away from getting my new razor today..the suspense is killing me! Being a knife guy for the past few years, I've got myself a decent collection of hones, stones, and strops. I'll be seeing if I can't get the razor into shaving shape myself, and if not, I'll be sending it out for professional care.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting myself into the hobby of wet shaving

welcome your at the right place, there is more help here than you could ever use! as for honing your own razor with your knife stones ,not really advisable and if your not familiar with straights it could be a sad story for your new razor. if it comes shave ready from a reputable source you just need to learn how to shave first then move on to honing,, that way you will have a god benchmark on what is shave ready ,, any way good luck ,ask questions and have fun tc

I soak my boars brush in hot water while i strop and shower. It really softens it. They also have a break in period once they've been used a while the hairs get split ends and the performance gets better

Hi and welcome. Check out the library for all the starter info and the other basics of Sr shaving. If your going to hone I'd suggest taking a look at the honing forum and watching some vids by Gssixgun and Lynn Abrams on YouTube. Any questions feel free to ask.
