Welcome to the most friendly, helpful and informative site on the web!!
You will find members here of all different backgrounds, ages and occupations from all corners of the world and all with a quest for more knowledge about using and maintaining a straight razor!
Thanks for including your location in your profile! While there are several members with a lot of experience in the NY and PA area perhaps one of them can be of help or know of someone who is closer to you! You can't beat hands on learning! You will learn more in a few hours than months of reading and watching videos!
If your razor was sharpened at the factory, then you will probably be disappointed with your attempts. Let us know what razor you have then perhaps we can give you some counsel.
Again Welcome! Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thank you for the welcome!! I do believe that hands on is the best way to learn ( at least for me that is ) ! I do quite a bit of travel so that might be a sticky point to the learning curve for me. We will see how things go, I think that learning to shave with it first and foremost is my goal for now.

Thank you for sticking to the basics!!!!
Learning to 'Properly' Strop and 'Shave' let alone make a good lather is more than enough for a Newbie to handle!!
It's frustrating how many times I see something like this:
"I just got my straight razor it's honed by a Pro and my shaves suck; What stones do I need"!
The OP needs stones/hones like he needs a hole in his head!! He needs to learn the 'Basics' first!!! Honing is a Whole Different Word!!
Good on you for taking your time, having patience and learning the basics!!
Keep that attitude up and you will enjoy the journey!!!!Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.
