    Thumbs up Hello from Italy

    Dear friends,

after following with a lot of interest the forum for some weeks it is the right time and my due to officially introduce myself. Thanks a lot also to Antonello (razorguy) for recommending me this platform.

    Briefly:

44 yo, live in the province of Bologna (Italy) - I'm an engineer and agronomist, dealing with agricultural mechanization and organizing trade fairs in this sector. Born and raised in Germany - reborn in Italy about 10 years ago!

I started my shaving adventure with cartridge double blades, continued with a DE given to me by my grandfather, and then with a Wilkinson Classic at University times. Then I had a traumatic transition to electric shaving. After some months, this 'thing' died and I picked up again my grandfather's old DE - and with soap and brush finally I started to shave again with pleasure and satisfaction. The rest of the story is quite common - about 20 DE walked in (all sold now except some nice ones), a lot of soaps (mostly Italian) which will be enough for my son, a lot of brushes (mostly Omega boar and some synthetic).

I was happy and satisfied - I found the ideal set-up ... it ends here?

Of course not ... I tried a straight razor, my first one (a Dovo 101 6/8 round point) did not give me great results in the beginning, so I looked for help and got it back 'shave ready'. Since then, I'm using DE only for my weekly headshaving. Obviously you can't own only one straight razor , so I added a Tiger 6/8, a Superkama 6/8 and a Bismarck 6/8.

I was happy and satisfied - I found the ideal set-up ... it ends here?

Of course not ... heard a man inside my head: 'Wouldn't it be nice to shave with a vintage straight razor restored and honed with your own hands?'. So the family started to grow (Taylor Witness, LouPer, Gevoso, Engels, Puma, Otto Busch, Lunawerk, Schulze, J.A. Henckels) - some stones, a lot of sand paper, a kind of Dremel and polish. I'm bringing back to life some straight razors, who are entering into my 'small' rotation - some will stay, some will go (as in real life)!

I'm glad to admit now that shaving with straight razor restored and honed by myself is a unique experience - as well as a 'duty to the history of these tools built 80 or 100 years ago!' (cit. razorguy). Beside this I found a great balance to my work!

Being still at the very beginning of restoration with a lot to learn and to listen to, I will often ask for hints and advices to the experts and I would like to thank you in advance for your answers!

    Best regards from Italy

    Ciao Raffaele,
While not Italian by birth, I am Italian in spirit. I went to school in Bologna for 6 yrs back in the 70's and in recent years we've returned each summer to Alba (Piedmonte area in NW Italy) for bicycle riding through the lovely hills covered with vineyards. We've also ridden through Sicily, Puglia, Veneto...Aside from the wine and food, to die for, I have to say that the Italians are the most kindhearted and warm people on this earth. But of course, you know that already!

Alora ben venuto and buon divertimento!!

    Alan

P.S.- Where in Bologna do you live?

Raffaele Hello, welcome to paradise shaving. Surely you remember me, I certainly remember the beautiful evening spent at home in the company of good razors and excellent food. I also remember your generosity in giving us the packaged soap from you! I am very glad you joined this forum. I also hope to meet you again along with other friends (and Razorguy 'warned!)

Welcome Raffaele. My great grandfather came from the village of Pescara, and my great grandmother came from Chieti.

Be well, be safe and enjoy the journey!
