Thanked: 0Long time lurker, first time poster
Heya,
Let me just say this forum is an awesome resource. I mentioned off hand that having a straight razor would be kind of a cool experiment last November. My lovely wife decided to get me a Dovo Shavette for Christmas, plus a brush and cream. So I checked out this and other forums and watched some videos and have been using the Shavette for the majority of my shaves unless I'm really in a hurry.
The wife was surprised at how much I got into it, spending a lot of time learning about razors on this and other forums and window shopping different razors online - so she recently found an antique razor on Etsy and gave it to me as a gift. I was a little nervous when I found out about it after reading the warnings in here about buying razors on line and being able to identify their quality and legitimacy as a razor and not just a knife, especially for beginners. So I came on here and looked in the library to see if I could find it. I couldn't find it exactly, but close enough to know it's authentic. It needs to be honed by somebody with more experience than me I think, it's not shave ready, but she sure is gorgeous.
5/8" Full Concave Wade & Butcher with a mother of pearl handle. There's a bit of tarnish and the mother of pearl is cracked in a couple of places but still holds.

Thanked: 4826Nice gift. Shave ready is the everything when it comes to putting a blade to skin. If you go to the classifieds section you will see a section called member services. Pick someone close to you to get it shave ready. Honing is a whole other aspect to shaving. In time if you want to you can go down that road. Honestly though with the cost of hones you can pay for honing for a long time before you see a payback on your hones. Around here you will discover that some do and some don't hone. Welcome and enjoy!
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Welcome aboard Chief. You sure have a keeper of a wife for her to be getting you a nice Wade&Butcher like that for a gift. Remember to ask any questions you have, there are a lot of good people here who really like to help.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Hi and welcome. Beautiful looking razor and an awesome wife you got there. For most of us the wife is complaining about the time we spend on razors. Good luck with your shaves

Thanked: 0Thanks for the welcome RezDog, Matt and Eddy.
My wife thinks it's cool too and she doesn't mind so much as long as she gets hers in the form of Tiffany jewelry and Lululemon apparel. She isn't a fan of me monopolizing the bathroom in the morning and doesn't understand why I'm not keen on her moving around behind me while I hold a razor to my throat in our tiny bathroom, so I just get up earlier.
I just checked out the classified and ID'd a couple for honing services. I may pay to have it polished and more completely restored. Thoughts?
Oh yeah, so using the Shavette both sides of the blade are identical and I'm ambidextrous, so I flip the blade over and swap hands freely. The W&B is ground slightly different on each side. Does that have much effect on the shave from one side to the other? When stropping, does it still follow the guide of laying the blade flat so that the spine is on the strop regardless of side?
Thanks!
C

welcome! my mothers side of fam is from brandywine md, spent most of my childhood summers down there. when I was old enough my oldest bro and I drove ourselves down and spent about 2 hrs circling the beltway, lol, trying to figure out where we messed up mooms directions!
anyway, nice looking razor. the razor performs the same from both sides and should be honed and stropped the same on both sides also. the grind may be slightly different if yours was ground on a Monday or a Friday (joke) but do you have a pic of the backside so we can get a better idea of what you mean?Silverloaf
