Thanked: 1My Family bought one for me as a gift on Fathers day. I have not had a good shave with it yet. I have honed it and it will shave only half my face and then it seems to dull very quickly. It was a gift and looks nice so I have kept it. It was my first SR. It was the thought that counted. When honing it you get what looks like a flat spot on the edge. On closer examination you can see the separation in the layers of metal. As you hone to get rid of this flaw it will travel with the grain in the metal. I just had to laugh because I refuse to cry.
Hope you can get a better start soon. You will enjoy the real thing.

Like you I'm a newbie. I purchased an inexpensive "beater" from Larry at The Whipped Dog along with an inexpensive strop to make all my mistakes on. Also, I did the ebay thing but as it turns out the fellow who sold it is an SRP member. All this stuff is still on it's way to me. I'm looking forward to getting started.
The razors I purchased aren't too expensive and I figure I'll use one until it gets dull, then send it out for honing while I use the other. By the time the 1st razor is back from honing I'll be into stones and will be learning how to produce a good edge (hopefully while I still have a decent shaver in the rotation).
The great thing about SRP is the feeling of community. A lot of people here want to help you get the most out of your experience.
Good luck and keep posting!
