Hello from Scotland
Hi Guys,
Just wanted to give a hello from Scotland.
I've been a "traditional" shaver for as many years as I can remember now and finally decided to pick up a shave ready straight I was given a few years ago.
Had my first straight shave this morning and it was not the bloodbath I anticipated albeit I had one semi serious nick and a couple of spots.
Open to advice and willing to learn.
Regards
Andy

Hi Andy, and welcome to SRP!
Which part of Scotland are you from? I lived in Fife for six years, and can't wait for this summer when I'll be getting back over for a visit for the first time in far too long.
Good to hear you avoided a bloodbath - that's always a good way to start. I think the best advice for anyone starting with a straight always includes some basics:
- take your time. Rushing things at this point will likely not end well, and taking your time not only makes for an enjoyable experience, it also allows one to concentrate on technique
- watch your blade angles. Usually somewhere around 30 degrees (usually works out to a couple spine widths) between the spine and your skin will work well.
- don't try to do everything just yet. Leave across the grain and against the grain passes for now. Once you're comfortable going with the grain, then add in some more complex aspects
- don't forget to stretch your skin. It makes a HUGE difference.
Other than that, relax, take it easy, and enjoy the ride.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Hi mate. I currently live in the Glasgow area but have moved about as I have family in the North East.
I only went WTG today, one pass only, and touched up with my DE. I also plan to purchase my own razor as the one I have was gifted to me as a "try it out" number.
I know that if I find a razor I really like I will make a bond with it.

Thanked: 8Welcome. I was stationed at Edzell in the early eighties and lived in a cottage overlooking Montrose for three years. Loved Scotland and would love to go back for a bit.
