Thanked: 18new guy from ND
Hello all ! Did my first straight shave yesterday. Over did what I had planned on trying and gave myself one small nick. I tried using a straight razor over thirty years ago when I ran out of blades and my hairdresser (ex) wife let me use her straight razor. As I was in a big hurry for my national guard meeting, and kinda shakey, and hungover at the time it didn't end well. They gave me a OK at least you tried at inspection Lol.
So now I have a new dovo in hand from SRD and 5-6 ebay purchases on the way. So like most I proceeded to nick up my brand new strop! (And probably dulled my new razor in the process) I also ended up with another strop from a razor I bought on eBay. (Have Lynn's DVD and watched it. And a bunch of tube videos) so that's my story so far.

welcome to the forums. There is a lot of help to be found here. Give it some time and you will be getting some pretty great shaves.

nodakjohns,
Sounds like you've done your homework - the videos are a great learning tool. I find myself going back and re-watching them periodically as a bit of a gut-check and/or reminder.
I started off with an Illinois Strop because they're not very expensive, and I presumed I'd kill it while learning. Once I got my stropping technique under better control, I moved on to a Mountain Mike's Strop, which I still consistently use. Lately, I've added an SRD strop into my rotation, and the more I use it, the more it's becoming my go-to strop - but, I do rotate it with my Mountain Mike's.
Good luck on your journey - it took me a short while to come up to speed, but at this point I'll never go to back to a cartridge razor.

Thanked: 18Thanks guys. I have a jemico smaller strop that came with an eBay purchase and my new red latigo 2 inch from srd (the one I'm butchering currently) and I just ordered one from star shaving supplys a 3 inch big daddy. So between them hopefully I can learn to strop. As for the shaving part that's the fun part. Got to much invested to ever quit now ! Im pretty persistent so I will succeed eventually.

Welcome to the forum. 3 nicks per shave means probably you need to slow down.
