Welcome to the most friendly, helpful and informative site on the web!!
You will find members here of all different backgrounds, ages and occupations from all corners of the world and all with a quest for more knowledge about using and maintaining a straight razor!
If you take the time to search, 99.9% of your questions can be found in the Library (WIKI) however feel free to ask us about whatever it is that you are wondering about or having a problem with. It does help if you’ve done some research before hand so it narrows the problem down a bit.
With all of that said, I have found that while 'enthusiasm' for this age old art is wonderful, 'Patience' is the key to make the journey successful!
So many times I read "I just got my first straight and I can't get a good shave from it what hones do I need"? Honing it the very last thing that they need!
They need to Master Stropping, Making Lather and of course Shaving. The far majority of the 'unsuccessful' shaves isn't because or the razor, it's the 'lack of technique'.
It sounds like you are off to a good start
I know that NY is large, however there are many members who will be glad to help you and one may be close by.
Be patient and enjoy the Ride! It's a Long Strange Trip, but it's well worth the Journey!

Welcome to the forum! Nothing at all wrong with shaving at night, I too am not a morning person, either. I've been straight shaving for 8 or 9 months now, still takes me 30 mins or so to do 3 passes.
Was just reading your last post, you may have accidentally rounded the edge, it's not hard to do. You may want to have a member close to you check it out for you. The pulling, tugging, and bumps could also be a product of improper angle/pressure. I still use too much pressure on occasion, especially on my neck area.

Thanked: 0Thanks Billy,
I feel I might have done something wrong with the stropping before my last post. Razor didn't act the same after that at all. I will look for a local who can advise. There was one very nice local forum member on this thread already that offered some help.
Much thanks,
Rich

I think that what I love the most about SRP is Members Helping Members! I have some friends in the NY area if you would like I can see if any of them are close enough to be able to sit down with you, and show you how to 'properly' strop your razor and also show how honing is done.

Thanked: 0Follow up. I continue to lurk as still a newbie. Shave every day with a straight. Stropping technique is a lot better thanks to the many posts and videos. Acquired a second razor on the classified which suits me as it is a compact 5/8 and for a nice price. Almost at the 6 month mark and I have bought my last cartridge blade for life - hopefully I don't develop the shakes. Really love both the feeling of the shave and the calming yet focus requiring ritual. Puts me in just the right frame of mind to start the day. Thanks for the forum, Lynn, moderators, mentors and all.
