Thanked: 0First time straight razor owner in AZ!
Hey all. I am a new razor owner today. Five days ago I never even thought of shaving with a straight razor. My brother called me excited about his new purchase of a Ontario Cutlery razor at an antique shop followed quickly by a JR Torrey and then a Pyramid razor, both online finds. I listened patiently as he went on about his new razor and asked myself, "But why?".
Today I purchased a Grah & Co. Gracie online and am figuring out what stones and strops to pick up before it gets here. I'm afraid I am watching a number of ebay items and drooling over custom and cleaned up blades. Next time I see my brother he'll probably get a sharp slap to the back of the head for the money he is costing me in a new addiction.
I'm glad this site is here and my brother pointed me over to find details on different brands and techniques.
Thanks for what you all do!
Jared

Thanked: 634Welcome
Don't worry about stones just yet. Get it professionally honed first. Get a decent strop, brush, soap and mug or scuttle. Take your time and get used to straight razor shaving. Practice stropping starting slowly and get used to that. Bonding will come later. Any questions please ask. We all love to help. Good luck.

Thanked: 0Thanks for the welcome Bouschie! I think that is fantastic advice. Stones will set me into the crazy cost of the whole hobby. Maybe just one 8 or 12k and a strop. Or just a strop like you suggest.

Raol, the pic is of the person's hand that sold it to me. Mine are a slight bit less hairy but I assume that you will be correct shortly!
