Welcome aboard Kentuckgent. I will give you my two cents. As far as a strop goes I would minimize the learning curve and get a paddle strop. You don't need to worry about the correct tension or any of that just yet AND you can use if for pastes or sprays down the road whenever you decide to try something else. As far as getting one of your razors honed, I recommend you look at the member services section Member Services - Straight Razor Place Classifieds and see who is close to you (though shipping a razor can be as cheap as $3 each way, so won't add a lot to the cost).
I highly recommend getting two of your razors honed. This will allow you to have a back up in case you have an accident while learning (dropping razor, dinging it on faucet, rolling edge while stropping......). It wont cost anymore to ship two razors vice one and is only a little more money.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the journey. Let us knowif you have any questions, there are a LOT of very knowledgable people here.

Give Brad at Maggar razors a call or Lynn and Don at SRD. The hours Brad is in the shop are on his site.
They are within striking distance and a good guy's.
