I have always struggled with this aspect. At one time I swore a guy needed to learn to hone asap. It seemed to me that a "newbee" would dull his blade faster than a veteran due to a multitude of reasons so the skill was paramount. Well at least I seemed to be dulling my blades rather quickly.

    Of course I was/am personalizing.

Anyway, I began honing out of the gate. One day after some time I got a new blade in that was pre-honed. i was amazed at how sharp and smooth it was. I had done myself a disservice by not benchmarking to a hone master s. I had succumb to bad hones lol! My bad hones. Lol!

Sending them out and knowing what a good edge is for a period of time might actually be a great idea .

Everyone's journey is personal I guess.

Too true, having that benchmark would have certainly made my life a lot easier at the beginning.

Hi and welcome. If you can a mentor is even better. I had an old barber hone my first razor and when I started honing he told me what was wrong and how t fix it. Wasn't long before I was doing all my own honing. Good luck
