Default New straight shaver in north Alabama area

    Good afternoon gentlemen (and ladies),

My name is Scott. I am a fairly new straight shaver and have been lurking here for a while, and naturally couldn't resist
joining in on the fun! I ordered a kit from SRD 2 months or so back containing:

    DOVO BQ 5/8ths
    Scuttle (I highly recommend)
    mug
patchouli SRD soap (initially a lot harder then walmart cheapo I had been cartridge shaving with but after a little use
it is much preferred and the scent is intoxicating)
2 sided hanging strop (I've nicked it up pretty good learning, probably should have started with poor man's strop from Larry but it is still in good working order)
    simpson b4 (very nice)
    and the styptic pencil (Ouch!)

I've been shaving and improving a little everyday. I feel that my angle is the thing that once improved really made the shave worth it. My razor is starting to tug a lot; the edge would have lasted longer in the hands of a pro but i'm sure initial bad shaving and stropping technique dulled it quickly. I have placed an order for Larry's sight unseen deal as well as a DE. The plan is to send the the Dovo back to Lynn for Honing once I get the razor from whippeddog, giving me a little time to save up for a Norton 4k/8k. That's where I'm at with my SR adventure as of now. Just wanted to introduce myself more than anything.

Also, is there anyone in the area on here? I wonder if there is a good place to find vintage razors or wetshaving supplies in general locally? The Kroger on Oakwood here in Huntsville just starting carrying DE blades.

    Welcome to the brotherhood, Scott!

    You're among good men(and a couple ladies, I believe)!

    Enjoy the journey!

    Regards,

    Simon
ps-I'm pretty sure there are members from AL. I'm trying to find a locale right now.

Welcome Scott. Sounds like you are off to a good start. Not sure who's in your area, but keep your eyes pealed for a meet-up close to you. Opportunities to attend one can yeild great results.

As far as where to score some razors goes, I can only regurgitate what others have advised. Hit estate sales and flee markets, but as always "buyer beware."

Thanks everyone. Got my razor in and it's nothing to look at but
Shaves smoothly. Still haven't even tried the DE. Will post a pic
Of the straight when I get a chance.

Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
