    Default Hello from N.E. Oklahoma

    Hello Gents,

I've been lurking around for a few months and reading a ton. I had been DE shaving for about six months with the excellent Edwin Jagger DE89 when I stumbled upon this site while searching for pre-shave info. I read several different topics in the forum and looked at pics of some beautiful razors and my interest peaked from there.

My first SR purchase was the Dovo best from SRD. Got a few training shaves from it before I dulled the edge and then I realized that the razor purchase was just the beginning.

Fast forward to today and now I have around $400 invested in razors and hones. This after telling my wife that the departure from Mach 3 cartridge shaving will save us a ton of money. I won't list my current razors now, as I intent on starting a new post in the "Razors" forum to hopefully get some info on some of my recent acquisitions.

I am getting a decent shave on my dominant right hand side but I still have work to do on the left side. At the moment, I am still using the DE for touch-ups and the majority of shaving on the left side of my face. I have the patience to see this through and my goal is to be shaving solely with a SR by the end of the year.

I have successfully set bevels and honed a couple of my flea market finds into pretty nice shavers but this may be just be dumb luck as I am having difficulties with the new Dovo. I really need to get with someone nearby to learn proper honing techniques and possibly restoration. Surely there is a way to locate mentoring members in my area but I haven't figured that out yet. Please let me know if you are willing to help a fellow Okie out.

I know I have tons to learn and this is the place to do it. I appreciate all the info, tutorials, and videos I've already found here and I hope to one day be able to contribute myself.

Thanks again for this valuable resource.

Hello, and welcome to SRP. There is a art to shave with a straight razor, but if you have patience, and practice it will all line up to a awesome shave. Just take your time, so you don't get frustrated, so you can enjoy the journey!

    Hello Spectro. Welcome to SRP!
I have read that using your non-dominant hand to lather will speed up the learning curve of shaving with the non-dominant hand. Here is a link to the library here at SRP that shows mentors by region. Local Help - Straight Razor Place Library

Welcome to SRP Spectro. Pleased to have you aboard.

Walter is oh so right. Patience and practice are the keys to enjoying this hobby to its fullest.

I believe one our member, who operates the SRP monthly giveaway lives in your neck of the woods. He may be a good first contact. Of course, these days, YouTube offers lots of videos, some by SRP members, about honing, refreshing razors and straight razor shaving. Here's one by SRP founder Lynn Abrams:

I am kind of going backwards thru your threads but Hello and Welcome :<0)

Thanks for the welcome guys. I know I have the patience to see this through but my increased shaving time is now wearing on my wife's patience. HaHa

I'll live the the non dominant lather thing a go. Thank for the tip.

I've seen hours of Lynn's videos both on YouTube and his DVD. Such great resources they are.

Hi and welcome. Follow the advice already given and you cant go wrong. At first my wife was annoyed about how long I took to shave, then about how many razors and hones I was getting and now its about honing on the kitchen bench next to the sink. There will always be something. Good luck with your shaves
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
