Greetings from not so sunny Phoenix, AZ
Good morning all. My name is Gary, and I have been transitioning from the expensive form of replaceable blade shaving. I have use a safety razor that was my grandfathers, and am now using a Parker SR1. After a month of using the Parker I am ready to transition to an actual straight razor.
About me: I am a US Army Veteran , and have been to many places in Europe and Asia throughout my time in service as well as my father's. Yeah, I was an "Army Brat" that enlisted. If I had known back then about shaving with anything other than the Gillette's , Schick's etc I would already have a nice collection of razors.
I have been researching , and though I do not have any manufacturer in mind specifically I think I would like to have a 6/8 or 7/8 to start off with. There is a "The Art of Shaving" store near me, so I am planning on going out and checking out what they have to better help me decide on what options I would like, though I am not sure if they will let me handle the razors to get a feel for the weight and balance of each one.
OK , time to get back to work. /sigh

Welcome to SRP, Gary! Sounds like you have things well in hand. Good luck on finding your first straight razor. Those are pretty good sizes to start off with. Don't think you'd be disappointed with either choice.

Welcome to SRP gary. Thanks for your service! It is much appreciated! As far as straights go I started with 6/8 round point. Served me well. Good luck. An don't forget to check the classifieds here. There's some nice cheaper shave ready razors in there.

Welcome Gary. You're making a good move coming to SRP, and I'd suggest using the local store to feel a few razors in your hands, but then you may want to comparison shop at SRD, Vintage Blades, LLC and in the classifieds here. Really "shave-ready" is a huge advantage to help you get off on the right foot, knowing what a SR should feel like on your face.
Again, welcome and enjoy.Just call me Harold

Thanked: 40Welcome Gary to SRP,
It's always great to see more Arizonans on this forum. I live out in North Central Phoenix myself.
I've got a decent collection of razors all the way from smallish 3/8 all the way to 8/8 large blades. I'd be happy to show these different razors and you could get a sense of their size and feel. PM me if you are interested. I've got some shave ready razors sitting around as well that I would be willing to sell you at cost.

Welcome to SRP from down the road in Tucson. I went to high school in Avondale, but time has changed it so much I barely recognize it. Ask any questions you have. There is a thread about an upcoming Arizona meet for later in the month or September I think. Check it out and make the drive if the date works for you.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
