It's already an obsession. I can't really explain it. Perhaps it has something to do with my job that includes lots of properly sharpened cutting tools.

    Welcome!

Man! You are in the right place. Amazing how it happens. Again and again and again.

Once I dabble into making them, I will likely spend lots of time there. However, I don't plan on doing any forging. At least not at first. Just metal removal. That's what I'm most experienced with.

    Smooth shaves!
I would think that after about ten or fifteen years of practice, I'd get pretty good at it. Mass Spec ionization sources and vacuum chamber parts are not similar to straight razors.

Very true, but precise work practices have a way of carrying over
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

    Razor pics:

Black Scales: Found in antique store. Paid $15.00 for it. Know nothing more about it. Has "Perfecto" etched on the blade. Blade width is close to 4/8.

White scales: Nice razor. Haven't had to touch the edge yet. Three shaves so far with it. Paid ~ $80.00 for it. Blade width is a bit over 5/8.
