Thanked: 0Hello From the Green Mountains
Hi Fella's, I'm a web and graphic designer who lives and works from home on a mountain top retreat in the Green Mountains of Vermont. I love living sustainably, growing my own food and helping small businesses and non-profits brand themselves (Think Up! Design | Vermont Web Design & Wordpress Development).
I've had a straight razor for a few years, but haven't been able to get it to a good hone after I moved away from the city and my guy who would sharpen it for me.
Just got my new Norton 4000/8000 waterstone in the mail and I'm looking to get back into it!

Hi and welcome. Check out the library for all the starter info and the other basics and the search will help you find a lot of answers also. Since you have a norton stone there is a thread titled JA Norton you should look up that might help. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 52Welcome to SRP. I'm pretty new to str8 shaving myself and I hone on the Norton 1,4,8k stones as well as JNATs. I highly recommend starting out on the Nortons, there is tons of experience to be had here on those stones and lots of videos too. The JA Norton threads are very helpful as are the vids in that stream. I chose to purchase good, straight, sound and inexpensive user grade razors from the classifieds on the forums to practice on. And with the help found in this community I was able to progress very rapidly. With good technique you can get very comfortable shaves from the Norton 4/8k. Read everything you can about honing on those stones and then start asking questions. We will all do our best to answer them. Your stones will likely need lapping before you try to hone on them they rarely come flat, so read about that first. Good luck and again welcome.

Welcome to the group. Lot of help here if you ask. Norton 4/8 is what I started with and Glenn was so helpful as I learned to use it. I would suggest that you get the best quality strop you can afford and practice on it with a butter knife. Don't rush the learning process. Most important part is to have fun.
GOOD LUCK!!!
