Welcome to the forum! The alum is a wonderful treat! When it burns, it tells you about your technique and the tender areas of your face. When it soothes...you know you've done everything right...that time!

A great soap to try is Osma Shaving soap, it has alum in it...a very unique soap, one of my favorites.

Thanks Phrank, I'll certainly try that. I'm using cream at the moment and haven't tried soap yet. Soon I will have more products in the bathroom than my girlfriend

Yeah I definitely hated shaving before i got the straight..

Didn't have much fun with it today though, I wish someone told me alum was French for napalm!! Definitely need to work at my technique haha...
Welcome Dan, French is a wonderful language as you know for instance the feminine for straight razor is "small torture device" but the masculine is "small torture device that drives the wife nuts".

Haha turns out mine was a torture device, not quite as 'shave ready' as claimed...

Got to wait until next week when my actually shave ready vintage 6/8 Kropp is delivered before I can send it for honing

    Beginners problems huh!...

Usually. There are several members on your side of the pond that may be close to you, it may be possible for you to get together with one or two of them for some one-on-one mentoring, Neil Miller would be the man to see if I were you.
