Thanked: 2New meber from Michigan
Hey there, Ive always been a knife collector and had a couple of razors but never used them. I decided to buy the right equipment to sharpen my own knives and had trouble sharping the razors, one will cut hair off my arm but the older one I took from my grandfather collection after he passed away I cant seem to get it right so I was going to get it professionally honed.

Welcome to SRP. Another knife guy that thinks that razors can't be that much different than knives to sharpen. Sorry, I'm a natural smarty pants. Why do you want to hone razors? Are you going to be shaving with them? Do you KNOW how to shave with them? My best advice if you want to hone razors, learn how to shave with them FIRST. The only true test of a razors sharpness is "How It Shaves". Be patient, spend some time reading and watching the videos that are out there and ask lots of questions we are more than happy to help. Check the members listing and see it there is a mentor in your area that will spend time giving you hands on training.

I do believe that there are straight shavers near to you to help you get properly started upon a long journey.
Check this list for mentors near to you. They have been shaving for a while and have probably experienced most of the questions you may ask in their progress. and many of them hone and restore razors also.

Thanked: 4826Welcome. Sharpening a razor is a cat of a different color. There is a lot of info here about it. I think Richard is spot on with getting a mentor to help, a pro sharp job in the mean time wouldn't hurt either. Nothing shave like an heirloom razor!

Hi and welcome. Definitely get the razors pro honed. Razors are sharp on a whole new level compared to knives. Having a good read through the library will also help answer a lot of questions and give you a good idea of what you need to know. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.

Welcome! As Coach said there are a few of us Michiganders around. My best advice since you are just starting to use a straight is to read the wiki, take it slow, and enjoy the entire process.

Welcome to the SRP community...
And you have the good fortune to be in Michigan - home of some great members and Artist Razor Makers...
Help is not far away...
Honing razors is not only science but art and touch.
I made Post and Rung ladder back chairs by hand for years and had to sharpen everything from spoon bits to broadaxes.
Razors are more like some Zen state that you get in to - with practice you get to "feel" the edge from feedback
Your sharpening experience will help you in that you understand the need for process and good form as you work, but the level of focus and detail is much finer.
