    Default Hello from Arizona

I've been using DE and SE razors for a while, now, and really enjoy traditional wet shaving. I'd been thinking about getting a straight, when a friend of mine who owns a knife shop told me he had taken a straight in on trade and wondered if I was interested. Well, it was a Thiers Issard from AoS with bovine scales. Still new in the box with a price tag of $260 and he offered it to me for $100. So, now I have a straight but still need to get a strop and then I'll go for it. I'm hoping to learn a lot here about technique before I hold that blade to my neck!

    Welcome to SRP!
Make sure you read the Beginner's Section in the Library.
And send that blade out to be honed by a pro. It may be new in the box and labeled "shave ready", but it is not face ready.

Good for you! Straight razor shaving also has a cool factor.

A warm welcome to SRP from another fellow Arizonan. What part of the state are you in ? There's a sizable number of SRP members in both Phoenix and Tucson.

Hi and welcome. Don't trust that factory shave ready. Do as Cris advised and send it for a pro honing. Good luck with the transition.

Im in the Phoenix area--East Valley. Does anyone from AZ know where I can get my razor honed locally? The guy I bought it from uses a wheel to hone knives, and I wasn't sure that his experience sharpening hunting and kitchen knives was the best option.

DO Not Let Him put the razor on that wheel!! Knives and razors are not even in the same category, I,m not sure if anyone local , but if not there are a few guys on here that hone the classifieds have them listed and there are some of us who use them, don't worry about waiting to get it back from honing , think how long you waited to get a straight. Good luck but get it honed or you will not enjoy this experience. Tc
