Default beginner in need of guidance through a sea of razorblades

Howdy y'all, Zippy001 here. I just recently took an interest in straight razors and am looking for any help you can throw my way. More specifically, what are reputable brands to buy from and what should I be looking for in a razor?

Welcome. You should look for an imp. or a gbug. or a shumate. or any ace. A 421 is great too. I prefere a square tip to get the ones under my nose. They all are fantastic steel. Get your steel and have it honed by a professional...You won't be sorry. after that all you have to do is a correct strop and shave.. REPEAT correct strop! BTW your strop and how you strop will determine how it feels. DO NOT strop after a pro sharpens your razor the first time, just learn from it. Dont cut your lip...or chin..or ear.... Watch your shaveing angle and adjust... I can do a straight shave in 5 min with minimal prep. Take longer and you'll be rewarded.. Nothing boosts your feel for yourself like a straight shave, im not kidding. Your pre shave prep is up to you and Im sure theres others that can chime in thet can guide you. Tip #2...dont buy junk steel and hope for the best...It doesnt work that way. When you shave your face with real steel...just learn..its that simple... My pre shave is a hot shower...wipe off the mirror..etc..slop on the soap...shave...but I take my time and pay attention while shaving..here...watch this for motivation...all I can say is I do this every other day...STROP STROP STROP

    Welcome to SRP!
Definitely start by reading the Beginner's Section in the Library. That will answer a lot of your questions.
If you are looking to start cheap, then take a look at whippeddog.com. There are also some quality razors in the classified section here. If you are looking to spend a little more money for new stuff, maybe check out some of the sponsors here. They have good stuff and good prices. The most important thing is to get a good razor that is professionally honed.

Welcome aboard! As stated above please give the Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library a look over. It will answer most of your basic questions and we can answer the rest. I would also recommend Beginner's guide to straight razor shaving - Straight Razor Place Library and Frequently Asked Questions - Straight Razor Place Library. As far as what is a "good brand" it is usually a safe bet that anything from Sheffield or Solingen (England and Germany) to be a good quality steel.

Hope you find what you are loooking for. Please ask whatever questions you have. Lots of good folks here who like to share info. Some of us even know what we are talking about
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.
