Thanked: 2Getting back on the horse
Just wanted to say hi again to everyone. I was straight razor shaving for a bit a few years ago and gave up on it. maybe it was because i felt it tookk too much time, or maybe i just wasnt doing it right to enjoy it. I am picking it up again and really determined to do it right this time. i look forward to communicating with the community on my journet and getting tips and tricks to help me along.

Welcome back.
I feel your angst! I am both impressed and glad that you came back - somewhere deep down, this is clearly something you feel a need to master.
I too wanted to learn but kept finding myself going back to my DE whenever I hit a wall. Ultimately one New Years, I vowed that I would shave with my straight for an entire year and nothing else. I am steadfast when I make my resolutions, so this worked for me. At about six months in I was shaving complacently. Honing on the other-hand... well that might take me a lifetime .
Learning to master a straight can come easy to some - for others, not so much. It certainly didn't come easy for me. Only by not giving myself the choice, did I get over that initial hurtle.
You can do it! Its fun!David

Thanked: 2When i gave up on it the first time i sold everything. I am kicking myself for it now. But it didnt cost too much the get what i needed. I ordered a cheap badger brush, basic strop, and dovo best quality for $125. Not as bad as i thought it would be. Plus the razor is shave ready. Not factory "shave ready" but actually honed by the seller before shipment.

Thanked: 2Yes i agree. i feel that this is something i really want to do. Shaving with a cartridge razor is just so impersonal and neutral feeling. I want something of quality and pleasure which is what i look for in everything i do. And i know i can master something when i want to, because i told myself a few years ago that i wanted to get really good with a yoyo and i spent a year practicing and i would say i am much better than most now. I can do the same with the straight razor.

Welcome back, and at least this time you know to start with a professionally honed razor.

I am literally laughing out loud. I have visions of you in the center of a big city with a striped shirt (black and white ) on, hustling an audience but not asking for donations. Just enjoying the entertaining.
Now if only I could juggle, we could start an act. Wait - I can play the harp (harmonica) - I could add a little drama music wise to the act!
Sorry man - that's where I go sometimes! I truly am jealous. At one time I gave the yoyo a shot. I stink. .David
