Hello from Florida
Hello all!
I have been wet shaving and using DE/SE razors for years. I just recently bought my first straight, a Dovo Special 5/8". It was an impulse purchase as I usually research this sort of thing. I'll be giving it a go this weekend. A little nervous but excited about it in general.
I'm looking forward to learning much more from the collective experience represented here!

Hi and welcome. Check out the library for all the starter info and the other basics of Sr shaving. Did you buy from a vendor who hones the razor before send out. If mot send for a honing. The factory edge isn't considered shave ready even though they say it is. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

Hey Robert,
Welcome to the forum! Like Ed said, use caution if you bought your razor from a vendor. Even though it may take off some whiskers it probably is not at its ultimate best. A factory edge will give you less than satis-"factory" performance. (Sorry about that, it was an impulse.) Take your time, go slow and have fun. And remember even a shave-ready razor needs to be stropped before each use. So, if you bought just a razor you may already be behind the curve. There are lots of shaving videos on You Tube that you can watch to pick up some good advice. If there is anything I can help you with just let me know.
Regards - Walt

Welcome to SRP!
Just to reiterate the above, have it professionally honed. The Classifieds here have listings of several professional honers.
There is a lot of information in the Beginner's Section in the Library, so be sure to go through it and if you have questions, just ask. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Welcome to SRP from the east coast of FL.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanks for the suggestions and tips!
I did buy from a vendor that offered the honing service. I ordered the service with the razor. I hope they do a good job. I have an older, gently used strop. Have been watching some videos to learn technique on that.
My first straight shave will be tomorrow. I'm getting more nervous as it gets closer.
