Thanked: 4Hello and request for help
Hi Everyone,
Nice to join your forum. I'm fairly new to straight razors and honing. I've been looking far and wide on the internet, trying to teach myself to hone, but I can't seem to get the hang of it. Is there anyone around NYC that has some time to sit down and show me how it's done? I think I've got all the gear I need -- I think I just need to see and feel it first hand to get in the swing.
Feel free to write me at my email at [email protected]
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Ethan

Thanked: 4826Welcome. I am certain it has to be easier in person than videos and reading. Also there are so many paths to the same place it is just confusing. Not having the option of a mentor I did videos and reading but stuck with lone persons videos and views on the subject.

Thanked: 4Thanks, Hirlau. If you have any suggestions, please fire away. Specifically, I'm wondering if I'm pressing too hard, not hard enough, or maybe have a bum 1000grit stone. maybe it's got some scratches in it that are screwing up the bevel (I made the mistake of letting my son mess around with it recently). I'm wondering if I can't find someone in person in NY to help, maybe someone would be ok to Skype.
Best,
Ethan

I doubt it's the stone, but might be.
It takes "Scratches" to make a bevel,,,
Hang in there, someone will find you,,,,,,,,,,,,

Welcome to SRP!
There are members in New York and hopefully one of them will chime in here in the next 24 hours.
Start here Category:Honing - Straight Razor Place Library and read and make sure your hones are lapped before putting a razor on them.
Of course a mentor is must easier to learn with.

Hi and welcome. Check out the YouTube videos by Lynn Abrams and Gssixgun. Both have great videos explaining what and why. Hope you manage to find someone local. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask

Have you shaved with a razor that was shave ready , if 1000 grit is all you have , then your not getting it ready ,, yes let's see the razor , and tell us your level of experience shaving , but it will help to do one on one , Tc

Hi ethan,
I can't help you with your honing issues, sorry, but it mght be better to let people use the PM service provided by the forum than give out your email address, there is a pretty active community around your neck of the woods as far as i am aware so you should get some help pretty quickly i would have thought.
Edit:
Martin103 and syslight are both mentors in your general area, go to quick links then view srp staff to find them quickly, you will have a better idea of whether they are close to youLast edited by edhewitt; 10-24-2014 at 05:35 PM.
