    Default Another Texan here...

    Hello all,

    Spencer here from Denton.

I stumbled on this site when I was looking into going to a straight razor. My interest seems to wax and wane but after lurking here for a while, my interest has become more cemented. I am sure this is due to the huge amount of resources this friendly and helpful community has to offer. I have been very impressed with the kind guidance and overwhelming generosity I have seen in my short time here.

Cemented, like a foundation. That is what this place is becoming for me. I know that if and when I run into issues there are plenty of people here that will help if I can't figure it out on my own. Makes it quite a bit easier to take the plunge.

I am currently using the Gilette Fusion that was the culmination of what I started with in high school. Yes, Gilette, geniuses of marketing that they are. My interest in straight razors did not arise from a desire to be more environmentally friendly, or economically conscious, or even chasing a better shave. My draw is simply that I love sharp, useful, and elegant pieces of art made out of steel. It started on my tenth birthday when Dad gave me a BSA model of the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Ever since then I have collected and sold many knives, and even made a few. Well, the natural progression of my affinity for sharp objects led me to here, albeit a bit later than it should have.

Well, I like to be able to use the tools I have and am looking forward to soaking up the abundance of information y'all have here. I put my name on the list for the LE SRP razor from Mr. Williams. I initially planned on getting a couple of inexpensive blades to work with. When I stumbled across that thread and saw the prototype, I had that feeling. It was like the feeling I had when the Rhodesian Ridgeback at a rescue I was visiting chose me to take her home. Or when I found the Buell X1 motorcycle that chose me to take her home. Or, well you get the point. I don't know much about SR's, but I recognize quality workmanship and materials when I see them. Plus, seeing as how it was designed and made by some esteemed members of this community who know a lot more about this than I do, I trusted its design was worthy. And, well, I think it chose me.

So while I'm waiting, I'll be reading and collecting some other tools of the trade...strop, soap, brush, etc.

Phew, sorry for the longwindedness. Thanks for the place to come and learn. I'm looking forward to this journey.

    Thanks for the welcome.

Funny thing happened... I was looking through the COTD thread for motivation/inspiration and my wife looked over and finally asked me, "Why the hell are you looking at a bunch of pictures of bloody guys with there shirts off? Is there something you need to tell me?" Hahaha!

Cracked me up. Once I explained to her what the forum was and how it was mainly manly men who are secure enough with themselves to share their old school straight shaving experiences with each other, she understood. I think. Somewhat, maybe.

Oh well. I could take up worse hobbies. Maybe she'll understand more once I start achieving that super smooth shave I know she loves.
