Thanked: 4826Hello and welome. Sounds like you should send some of those out for honing and put them to work.

Welcome. You will soon learn that the blades you own are made by high quality manufacturers. There are soooooo many people here who will extend their hand when it comes to help on any and every topic regarding razors and shaving.
The best American who ever lived? John Wayne.

Hi & welcome to SRP. You will have plenty of enjoyment here & there is also a wealth of information here if you start at the Library:
Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library
Do you have a strop yet? That is one of the most important things for a new member to have & to utilize it correctly so that you can maintain the shave ready razors you may have. One thing many new members, (not you), will do is not to get their stropping technique down just right & will dull a blade. There was a recent new guy, I'm not mentioning any names, but he had a nice new razor & it was either not shave ready like it was supposed to be because he bought it from another vendor & he dulled it worse by trying to hone it. It was very possible that all he had to do was strop it real good but we don't know that for sure. Shit happens & we all make mistakes, but we learn from them too. I'm hoping you have a strop and have learned how to use it well. I also hope you have a brush, a mug & some shaving soap(s). As far as the bad scales on the latest straight you picked up, you can either send it to someone to put new scales on it or you can try to make some yourself here:
Category:Scale Making - Straight Razor Place Library
Since you have more than one straight, I hope you have at least two that are shave ready. I don't know if you do your own honing also but if not, you will want to have one handy to shave with when you send one out to be honed. I can go on & on about straight razors but the best thing for you t do is to cruise the forum & in the Library & you will find out a lot of good information. Also you can look for meetings & get togethers here:
Straight Razor Place - Meetings and Get-Togethers
And also try to find a member in your area if you need some one on one help. I know there is a way to find them but I can't find it right now. It is driving me crazy that I can't find that page. I have searched for hours & can't find it. Just ask if there is someone in your state & someone will chime in hopefully that can help you out. If I find that page, I will let you know.

Thanked: 2I do not have a proper strop yet, that is on the Christmas list. I have been stropping on a $10 dollar Walmart belt for the last year and a half or so, accompanied by a nylon shoulder strap form the canteen I carried during Desert Storm. They both work surprisingly well for what they are.
I maintained my razors with a Smith Tri Hone and a Saville barbers hone for a long time. That is how I found SRP while looking for a better solution to keeping them sharp without destroying them in the process. I now use a Taidea 3000/8000, a C12k , a DMT for lapping and some CrOx on the nylon strap.
All of the razors are shave ready. I use the GD 208 and the Straight American most of the time, they both shave very well. The Carbo Magnetic is a well-worn razor and is the most geometrically challenged razor to hone. The Oxford is a blood thirsty spike point and the Henckels is ultra sharp but is a 4/8. The Henckels is a bit small and the Oxford is a bit blood thirsty for five in the morning.
I rescaled the Oxford with Elk Antler and repinned the Carbo, so I have a little experience with the process. I just need to decide what to scale the Hargreaves with. I have ElK, Ram, Cow, and even an Oryx horn lying around. I also have a small block of Karri wood that would be suitable if I decide to go that direction. The Hargreaves is a smiling French Point. It is a beautiful blade, I just need to make sure I do it justice.
Bowl and brush I have used for a long time with my DE’s.
The main reason I joined was to show appreciation for the amount of knowledge and information available on this forum. I know that I did not get that across in my first post. I learned all I needed to know by reading the forum. I did not need to join or ask questions, all I had to do was read, and that is what is great about this place.
Thanks for the welcome and all of the information.
